Workplace Wellness Whisperer – (October 22)

Hello Workplace Wellness Seeker,

Happy Saturday!

What are you up to this weekend? I just made myself some amazing hot chocolate with Cacao from Guatemala. Check out my chocolate-making experience from cacao bean to the chocolate bar on Instagram or Facebook

Studies show that expressing gratitude can improve your mood. People who regularly express gratitude for the positive things in their life are shown to be happier overall, leading to lower rates of stress and depression.

Do you give your employees autonomy?

Nothing kills employee engagement and employee morale like a lack of autonomy. But when your team members have the power to make decisions and take action in their roles, they’ll be more invested in their success and that of your company. This translates to happier employees and happier people.

For your next employee wellness program, train your staff in the art of critical thinking and then give them decision-making power. Make “taking the next step” an initiative and a goal to achieve. When your employees find success flexing their decision-making muscles at work, they’ll soon put those same muscles to work in their personal life. Not only will your staff be happier and more engaged, but you’ll also notice more successful customer interactions and better overall customer service.

My Workplace Wellness Calendar can guide you with some ideas for implementing your wellness strategy.

Let me share with you two example of companies who are doing it right.

  • Worldwide, luxury hotel chain, Ritz-Carlton, has taken employee empowerment to the next level. With an eye on customer satisfaction, Ritz-Carlton team members are authorized to spend up to $2,000 per guest to resolve customer issues. There’s no need to speak to a supervisor or get approval from a manager. While this goes a long way to make customers happy, it also gives employees a feeling of empowerment. This trust and flexibility help team members feel more invested in their jobs, which leads to better performance.
  • Wegmans has onsite health and wellness screenings and customized yoga plans available to all team members. Stressed-out workers are not the best employees, and Wegmans decided to tackle the problem head-on. Their customized yoga programs give team members the tools and techniques to relax, decompress, and even get healthier.

Tip #1. Morning Routine

Do You Have A Morning Routine?

A morning routine helps us set the tone for the day, better allowing us to control our schedules rather than our schedules controlling us. As we start each day fresh, we can better focus on what is in front of us, where to prioritize our time, and, ultimately, increase our productivity. I have found that I am most productive as soon as I wake up. So I tend to do all my creative tasks in the morning. After my 60mins of self-care which is usually a mix of Breathwork, Yoga and weight training or spin. Creating a morning routine for yourself is essential to a successful life. Waking up a little earlier than usual will give you ample time to focus on your goals and conquer the day with more energy, mindfulness and strength.

Tip #2. DONE Is Better Than Perfect!

Are you a perfectionist at work? Is it stressing you out? Iā€™m a recovering perfectionist. At the workplace this could be an unnecessary source of your stress. Perfectionism is a personality trait characterized by the need to strive for flawlessness, often accompanied by critical self-evaluations. Setting such high performance standards for ourselves can be damaging to our health. Often perfectionists will procrastinate because they are looking for the perfect timing to take action, I’m so guilty of this! One way I’ve learned to overcome my perfectionist nature is by being content with the outcome even if it’s not my level of perfect. My new motto is “”DONE is better than PERFECT!”” Of course without compromising quality, and the beauty of this motto is that you can always go back and make the necessary tweaks, but the key is to get it done and stop procrastinating. 3 ways to get your work done on time include #1. Create a daily planner #2. Keep a time limit for each task #3. Start your work early. Of course you can refer to my other workplace wellness tips like creating a clean workplace & taking care of yourself with a healthy diet and exercise that will help you achieve your workplace goals.

Tip #3. Let Your Words Go Through These 3 Gates

Let Your Words Go Through These 3 Gates

Why ā€˜think before you speakā€™?

Because while most of us are pretty careless with the words we choose, words are just so powerful. They can be helpful or hurtful, and can have a direct influence on the outcome of a situation, creating a positive or negative reaction in our world.

Before you speak let your words go through these 3 gates:

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it necessary?

3. Is it kind?

Tip #4. Strengthen Your Diaphragm

Have you tried belly breathing or abdominal breathing? Diaphragmatic breathing exercises are designed to improve the efficiency of ventilation, decrease the work of breathing, increase the excursion of the diaphragm, and improve gas exchange and oxygenation. Breathing from the diaphragm also generates intra-abdominal pressure for control of posture and you can accomplish slow respiration.

Tip #5. Do you have plants in your home office?

Weā€™ve talked before about the health benefits of houseplants in your home. And the same is true of your office! Whether youā€™re able to create a full-blown garden at your desk, or you just have one plant in a corner, there are a couple key reasons to add plants to your office space: – Sadly, indoor air is typically much more polluted than the air right outside your office building. But certain plantsā€”like easy-to-care-for peace lilies, rubber plants and spider plantsā€”are great natural air purifiers. Adding them to your workspace can help to remove toxins from the air youā€™re breathing in. Exposure to greenery from plants is shown to reduce fatigue, boost creativity and productivity, and may even make you happier! Woohoo!
