Why do we need to first learn breathing correctly?
We have been inhaling and exhaling continuously since birth. Does that mean we have been practicing breathwork this whole time?
Unfortunately, no. Most of the time, we don’t even realize we’re breathing—it just happens automatically. That kind of breathing is important for keeping us alive, but a true breathwork practice is about intentional manipulation of breath. Breathwork often offers beautiful feelings of peace or different perspectives and a sense of increased calmness and balance. Anxiety is reduced and we feel free from tension.
I invite you to join the monthly online New Moon Breathwork Experience. Purchase your online tickets here.
Feeling overwhelmed with stress? Try meditation for stress relief. Learn how to build your resilience using simple tools like your own breath.
Take a gentle, deep breath in for a count of 4.
Now slowly breathe out for a count of 6, a little longer than your inhalation.
Repeat 3 times.
Observe how you feel. Do you notice any change?
Sure you do! Your breath is a powerful tool to ease stress and lessen feelings of anxiety. You might be wondering how breathing helps in stress relief?

The American Lung Association (ALA) provides the following advice on how to breathe correctly.
Use the nose
Breathing through the nose can slow the breath and make the lungs work more efficiently. It also facilitates the intake of nitric oxide, which helps with oxygen transportation throughout the body.
Breathing through the nose also allows the nostrils to:
- filter toxins and allergens from the air, thereby preventing them from entering the body
- warm air that is too cold
- humidify air that is too dry
Use the belly
The most efficient way to breathe is by bringing the air down toward the belly. As the diaphragm contracts, the belly expands to fill the lungs with air.
“Belly breathing” is efficient because it pulls the lungs downward, creating negative pressure inside the chest. This brings air into the lungs.

Breathing exercises help slow down a person’s breathing pattern and improve lung efficiency. They are particularly beneficial for people with asthma, COPD, and other conditions that cause shortness of breath. They can also help calm a person who is feeling anxious.
