What is the Breathwork philosophy in Tantra?

With the development of Tantrism, the yogic disciplines of posture and breath control were combined with sexual practices that served to unite the practitioner with cosmic energy as symbolized by the great goddess.  According to Tantric texts, the object of pranayama is to arouse the divine cosmic force in the body, symbolized by a coiled and sleeping serpent that lies dormant in the lowest nerve center at the base of the spinal column. Once aroused by breathwork this energy rises up through the spinal column until it reaches the head and there unites with the supreme soul.

Tantric breathwork awakens sexuality and inspires a deeper sense of calm. In this practice audible exhales are used to activate the vagus nerve. This nerve is one of four nerve pathways where sensual energy moves in the body. And, while the audible exhales work to calm the nervous system and awaken sensuality, the vibration of your vocal cords as you breathe opens the body up to feel more.

A few months ago I had my first introduction to ecstatic breathing. This experience produced a powerful understanding in me about the power of breath. Breath is a tool for transformation and can be used to play in the many fields of ecstatic living. Breathing techniques are utilized in all forms of yoga, meditation and Tantric practices and even health activities like exercise and blood pressure reduction. There are calming breaths that incorporate deep belly breathing for relaxation and there are ‘charging’ breaths for increasing focus and turn-on.

Breathing doesn’t seem very sexy but it’s the key to orgasmic pleasure and self-empowerment for women and to lasting longer for men. The benefits of learning new, simple ways of breathing are extraordinary and have direct health benefits, too. Breathing deeply into your belly increases relaxation, decreases tension and stress, helps women focus on pleasure and puts more oxygen into your blood stream. Oxygen is what delivers the ‘O’ in Orgasm.

To focus the mind and increase blood flow a woman can do several specific breathing techniques that are very simple yet effective in moving her much faster into the ‘zone’ of body/mind unity. Some breathing patterns are aimed specifically for increasing oxygen and nitric oxide (this is the stuff in your blood that Viagra targets) in the blood and you’ll find that these breathwork exercises add a new dimension to your pleasure.
