Workplace Wellness Whisperer – (Apr 2)

Hello Workplace Wellness Seeker,

Why are wellness programs important in the workplace?

Corporate wellness programs have been studied for years, and companies worldwide have started introducing such programs in their workplaces. Starting as employee perks for large companies called corporate fitness programs or wellness programs are more popular now than ever.

According to a survey conducted by Harvard Business Review, 79 percent of employees who participated in a health and wellness program said they were extremely satisfied with the program and were more likely than non-participants to stay with the company.

Wellness programs are a great way to promote good health behaviors in the workplace. They can be fun, informative, and very engaging. Moreover, well-designed wellness programs help employers bring down employee absenteeism and reduce healthcare costs. Now, workplace wellness programs are common among businesses of all sizes.

I invite you to benefit from my daily wellness tips on my YouTube channel to help you and your employees to help you and your employees support wellness at work and at home.

I’m am happy to share with you a summary of this week’s workplace wellness tips that are simple, practical and easy to implement.

Tip #1 – Pay attention to your inner voice & Self-Talk

Worrying is like a rocking chair – it gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere.

We all underestimate the power of our self-talk that inner voice usually over exaggerating making things worse than they really are because our amygdala – which is a part of our limbic brain – love to deal with fear.

I recently experienced this, I was going to turn down an awesome opportunity for fear of failing and luckily, I surround myself with pretty awesome people that encouraged me to take the opportunity because hey what’s the worst that can happen. Believe or not this changed my perspective and now when I hear that inner voice – I tell it to bugger off!

So next time you’re faced with tough circumstances just pay attention to what you tell yourself and remind yourself that often times things are not as bad as they seem.

Tip #2 – Guided Loving Kindness Meditation

This type of meditation can help manage stress, improve sleep, reduce depression and anxiety, enhance self-awareness and social empathy, promote deep rest and healing, and increases immune function, working memory, focus and attention span. I hope you enjoy this guided meditation and evoke feelings of love and kindness towards yourself and others and help you experience deep and profound restoration.

Tip #3. 80/20 Rule for Productivity

You will never believe how easy this one is to do.

Hara hachi bu – the 2500 year old Confucian mantra spoken before meals in Okinawa – reminds people to stop eating when their stomachs are 80 percent full. The 20 percent gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between losing weight and gaining it. People in the Blue Zones eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening, and they don’t eat any more the rest of the day.

In the workplace the 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, is a motto which asserts that 80 percent of outcomes (or outputs) result from 20 percent of all causes (or inputs) for any given event.

In business, a goal of the 80/20 rule is to identify inputs that are potentially the most productive and make them the priority.

Let me guide you on how you can apply this rule at your workplace.

(1) Make a list of the 10 things you spend the most time on.

(2) Circle the two that truly drive your results. Do more of those.

(3) Look at the others. Eliminate ruthlessly. Automate or outsource what you can. Press pause on the rest.

(4) Repeat the steps

Tip #4. Do You Have Plants in Your Home Office?

We’ve talked before about the health benefits of houseplants in your home. And the same is true of your office!

Whether you’re able to create a full-blown garden at your desk, or you just have one plant in a corner, there are a couple key reasons to add plants to your office space:

– Sadly, indoor air is typically much more polluted than the air right outside your office building.

But certain plants—like easy-to-care-for peace lilies, rubber plants and spider plants—are great natural air purifiers.

Adding them to your workspace can help to remove toxins from the air you’re breathing in.

Exposure to greenery from plants is shown to reduce fatigue, boost creativity and productivity, and may even make you happier! Woohoo!

Tip #5. How to Reset Your Mindset for Better Problem Solving

Let me give you all a beautiful reminder of this very powerful truth. Your mindset is a collection of thoughts & beliefs that shape your behaviour and ultimately your habits.

So how can you ensure you’re expressing the highest version of yourself? You got to do the work!

Engage in self-improvement, unlearn what you know, if necessary, and re-program your subconscious mind. Ensuring your thoughts are conducive to helpful beliefs and those beliefs shape good habits, which allow you to live your dream life.

Are you feeling stuck? Not progressing? Consider this: What are some of the things you can change that are obviously not working and will help you address some of your challenges?

Perhaps, it’s as simple as revising the due dates of some of your goals or projects, or revisiting the milestones, or maybe you need to redefine that goal.

We often get stuck on the HOW we can address a challenge or a problem, but the answer might be WHO can help you solve the issue.

Stepping away from the issue and getting a good night’s rest is also a great way to reset and come back to it with a fresh perspective.
