Omega Oils: What you NEED to know!
Can healthy oils lead to suppleness in joints, better mood, energy and softer, silkier skin & hair? ✨YES! ✨
‘Omega’ – the last of the Greek alphabet, when applied to dietary fats represents a healthy beginning. Polyunsaturated fats like the omega-3 and omega-6 are essential fatty acids that play a vital role in heart, brain, joint and skin health to help us feel and look amazing, inside and out. In the Self-Care Goddess podcast episode #71, the legendary Udo Erasmus talks about genetics, biology and nutrition and the importance of consuming healthy oils. He elaborates on his philosophy “My health is my responsibility” discussing how we can make our life the most fulfilled, healthy and thrive as we age.
An old adage says, “We are what we eat”, which essentially means that the body is made out of food. 98% of the molecules/atoms in the body today will be removed and replaced within a year indicating that the body is always turning over. If something is wrong with our body and we raise our standard for food intake, which are the building blocks for body construction; then in one year, we have rebuilt 98% of our body to a higher standard. 👉 But do we know what the standards are?
We have proteins, fats, carbohydrates, essential nutrients, 18 minerals, 13 vitamins, 9 essential amino acids and 2 essential fatty acids. In this blog the focus is on oils which is perhaps the most confusing and contradictory ingredient in our diet.
This blog post summarizes just a few of the golden nuggets from our insightful conversation, for the full details listen to the entire episode here or on your favourite podcast platform by searching for the Self-Care Goddess podcast.
How Are Oils Made?
Omega-6 and Omega-3 are essential oils and the most sensitive of all nutrients that can be easily damaged by light, oxygen and heat. Omega-3 is five times more sensitive than Omega-6. Every cell needs Omega-3 and Omega-6. 99% of the population doesn’t get enough of Omega-3 for optimum health. Utmost care must be taken while manufacturing, storing and consuming these oils. 👉 The worst thing is to throw them in the frying pan and watch them turn into smoke. The frying process increases inflammation and risk of cancer whether it is carbs, proteins or fats. Oils are damaged by industrial processing because they are treated with sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid, a corrosive base and acid along with bleaching and heating at frying temperature to get rid of the rancidity. They are packaged in plastic bottles (a source from where plastic seeps into the body) and also include pesticides because the manufacturing units don’t use organically grown seeds. Oils are perishable molecules, just like lettuce. To get a long shelf life and mass production all this damage is done and ignored so that it is commercially viable for global selling. The ideal manufacturing should represent a very tight processing that starts with organically grown seeds, no oxygen and no high temperatures. Pressing, filtering, settling and filling in a brown glass bottle in a box in the fridge where nitrogen gets flushed in the factory is the ideal system needed for healthy oil manufacture.

Omega-3 & Omega-6 Deficiencies Symptoms
Omega-6 deficiency is rare; however, it comes partially damaged for consumption. Damaged oils cause more problems than any other part of nutrition, even more than sugar. If you have one tablespoon of an oil that is 1% damaged by processing, a huge “60 quintillion” oil molecules have been damaged in that 1% per tablespoon. In those 60 quintillion damaged molecules, there are more than a million damaged molecules for each of our body’s 60 trillion cells! Usually we don’t consume 1 tablespoon, we may take 2-4 a day. There are pesticides in the oil and we use it for frying which increases the toxicity by another 3-6 times. We have consumed these oils for 30+ years, so we have to multiply it by almost 11,000 for the number of days in 30 years. Thus, an enormous number of molecules not designed for human consumption will find a place in the body where another molecule should be. This is when things go off balance and illness sets in. If there is only one molecule in the body, it will not show up in symptoms, but there are over a million for every cell. Over time, the body breaks down. The two most obvious things that happen when oils are insufficient or imbalanced are:
- Dry skin
- Low energy levels
Every cell needs both omega-6 and omega-3. When we don’t have enough Omega-3, the cardiovascular risk factors and inflammation goes up. Inflammation is the root cause for everything – osteoporosis, cancer, Alzheimer’s, arthritic diseases etc.

Facts About Omega Oils
- Cell membranes and hormones in our body are made from omega oils and they are essential for brain function, vision, sperm formation and energy levels. Omega-3 is the only molecule that is both – a fuel to build up the fire of life (vitality) and also the only molecule in nutrition that is 80% burned as fuel. The other 20% is changed into derivatives which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory function. No other molecule does both at the same time, so Omega-3 is super special.
- Flaxseed oil is the richest source of Omega-3. The downside of flax oil is that it is not well balanced between omega-3 and omega-6. With only flax oil consumption we can become Omega-6 deficient leading to dry eyes, skipped heartbeats, arthritis and thin papery skin. We can fix that by eating more omega-6 to get the balance right. “Udo’s choice oil” is a blend that has 9 ingredients with all the good we need from oils and excludes all that bad we shouldn’t have.
- The optimum intake for Omega oils is between 2-4 tablespoons per day for an adult depending on body weight and based on how much oil we need to make the skin soft and velvety because these two essential fatty acids together form a barrier in the skin against the loss of moisture. The heart, liver, kidneys and internal organs get priority for these oils, because we can live with dry skin, but not with dry vital organs. So, if your skin is soft and velvety, the rest of your body has what it needs.
- Fat burning omega-3, turns on the fat burning genes and turns off the fat production gene. They go with any food and enhance flavors. The best way to consume the oil is to drizzle it on the food rather than taking it in isolation. This also improve the absorption of oil soluble nutrients.
- Omega-6 is easy to find compared to Omega-3 and they are the highest energy nutrient of any essential nutrients, because they have double bonds that increase chemical reactivity. Omega-6 is called linoleic acid. Most seeds and nuts contain linoleic acid but we have to figure out how much of what is needed to get the ideal ratio of consumption. Turmeric is one of the world’s greatest spices that speeds up the conversion of alpha linolenic acid into the derivatives.
- 💊 🐟 Along with fish oil supplements/capsules, a bottle of healthy essential fatty acids (oil manufactured correctly) is most important because we need more fat than we can get from supplements. But keep in mind that the supplement capsules will not address the root cause. After setting the foundation of oil consumption which is 28 – 56 grams, we can add a supplement for more benefits.
